If you are looking for a role that blends your love for animals with meaningful customer service, this Animal Shelter Attendant position might be your ideal fit. This part-time, onsite job provides an opportunity to make a difference in the lives of both animals and people. With a competitive hourly wage that increases incrementally from $30.83 to $32.89, you can enjoy reliable income while building valuable experience. The position is unionized, offering added employment stability and fair conditions, including a set schedule from Thursday to Monday, 9:00 AM – 5:00 PM.
Day-to-Day Responsibilities & Job Overview
In this role, your daily responsibilities range from clerical support to animal care. You’ll handle calls and emails, process applications and payments, maintain accurate records, and liaise with vet clinics. Providing information to the public and assisting in shelter events are also integral duties. During staffing shortages, you’ll jump in to clean animal areas, feed and monitor animal health, provide medication as directed, and ensure every animal receives proper exercise and attention. Training new counter staff and helping the team where needed completes the diverse scope of tasks you’ll tackle day-to-day.
Pros: Career Growth and Supportive Team
This position offers clear advancement with step increases in pay. Working in a unionized environment adds security and access to fair labour practices. The collaborative atmosphere means you’ll be part of a supportive, community-focused team. Additionally, involvement in animal care provides rewarding, hands-on experience that can help develop your skills and passion for animal welfare. If you care about making a positive impact, this role delivers that in spades.
Cons: Occasionally Demanding and Requires Flexibility
As with most animal shelter roles, the job can sometimes become physically demanding, especially during staff shortages. Duties like cleaning, feeding, and exercising animals require energy and resilience. The fixed weekend schedule may not align with everyone’s personal needs, and handling difficult customer interactions can occasionally be stressful. A background check is required, and candidates must have at least one year of experience with animals, making it less suitable for complete new entrants.
Verdict: A Role for the Devoted and Community-Minded
If you have a passion for animal welfare and thrive on helping both people and pets, this job is a strong contender for your next career step. It offers structure, support, skill growth, and the chance to see your work make a meaningful difference daily. If you meet the requirements and are ready for the demands and rewards alike, consider this a positive and fulfilling opportunity.
